Periphery have made a name for themselves as one of the forerunners of the relatively new genre known as “djent.” The progressive-metal subgenre has been criticised many times for consisting of nothing but third-rate Meshuggah wannabes and I’d agree with that to an extent. It’s true that it can be very hard to find djent bands that have forged an identity for themselves outside of their influences, but Periphery always felt a bit more comfortable in their own skin than most of their contemporaries. They’re also a band that has improved massively with each release.
